Support

€620 a year keeps this running.

United Academics Foundation has no offices, no salaries and no paid staff. What it does have is running costs — and in 2025 those were carried entirely out of the founder’s own pocket.

Where the money goes

Most organisations asking for your money cannot show you their entire cost base. We can, because it fits in three lines. This is the whole of what the foundation spent in 2025:

Expenditure 2025
IT costs / domain registrations € 367,66
Banking costs € 254,03
Total € 621,69

Donations received in 2025: € 0,00. The full accounts, including the balance sheet, are on the governance page.

That figure keeps the domains registered and the magazine online. It does not stretch to the library rebuild, to events, or to commissioning writers. That work is happening regardless — the library is being rebuilt right now — but it advances at the pace volunteers can manage around their own jobs. Funding is what would let it move faster.

€ 52 a month

covers everything the foundation currently spends.

The most useful way to give

If you commit to giving a fixed amount each year for at least five years, your gift becomes fully deductible from your Dutch income tax. The threshold and the ceiling that limit ordinary donations — both set as a percentage of your income — do not apply to a periodic gift. For many donors this means the tax office effectively covers a substantial part of the gift.

It does not require a notary. The Belastingdienst publishes a standard form: you and the foundation each sign a copy, you set up a standing order, and that is the entire procedure. We keep one signed copy, you keep the other for your tax return.

For a foundation of this size, a handful of these agreements is the difference between scraping by and being able to plan. Write to us and we will prepare the paperwork — it takes about ten minutes.

A one-off gift

A single transfer is just as welcome, and needs nothing from us beforehand.

We are a registered ANBI, so gifts from Dutch taxpayers are deductible above the statutory threshold and up to the statutory maximum. The RSIN above is the number your tax return will ask for. If you need a written confirmation of your gift for your records, just ask.

Ways to help that cost nothing

Money is not the only thing in short supply. If any of these describe you, we would genuinely like to hear from you:

  • You research or publish. Advise us on open publishing models, peer review transparency, or where the incentives actually sit.
  • You write. Turn a peer-reviewed study into something a curious reader can follow, for United Academics Magazine.
  • You work at a university, library or funder. Institutional partnerships reach further than anything we can do alone.
  • You write software. The open access library is being rebuilt right now. A developer who can give an evening here and there moves that work faster than anything else on this list.
